1. Our home
We moved into a little apartment. Down side is that we have no backyard, which we had in our previous house and loooved. Up side is that we are a block and a half away from the surf beach and a half block away from a little cove with calmer waters and a netted off area for the kids to go swimming. We love our little place and the location. I literally walk everywhere. Within a five minute walking radius from my house we have:
public transportation, ferry and bus
library
post office
bank
2 grocery stores
family doctor
bakery
video rental
cinema
pharmacy
10 different fast food restaurants
clothes and shoe shopping
nice sit-down cafes and restaurants
playground (a couple more playgrounds are within 10-20 minute walk)
aquarium
barber
I only have driven three times in the last three weeks. To Target (they have Targets here!), Mosman Beach and to a park to meet up with friends. It's crazy. I love being able to walk to all of these places so quickly.
2. Our Ward
We love our new ward and have felt very very welcomed here. Our ward is largely Polynesian, some Asian, and a few white people here and there. William and Burke make up 2 of the 3 white kids in Primay and Nursery. Don has already gotten a calling in Young Men's. He'll be great and is very excited. It's fun to be able to feel the Australian/Polynesian culture a bit and I am excited to become more familiar with it. I have started going to an informal playgroup with a few moms that meet about once a week.
3. The language
I love hearing all these new phrases.
brekkie=breakfast
kindy=kindergarten, obviously, but what I didn't know is that it isn't just a slang word, it is what they really call it, even in newspapers
cozzies=swimsuits...the formal name for swimsuits is swim costumes, and costumes got shortened to cozzies
slippery dip=slide...that's a fun one!
chewy=gum
pinch=take, steal...someone at Don's work took a piece of his gum while Don was away from his desk. When Don came back, the guy told him he had "pinched a chewy" off of him
tip=tag...the kids play games of tip here
heaps=heaps. As in, you can save heaps of money shopping at Aldi's. I like this word heaps. It's heaps cool. I hear this word used all the time.
4. The Names
I love the names of cities and places here. So charming
Breakfast Point
Darling Harbor
5. Random
Yoga and Asian style yoga (I don't know what it is called) is very commonly done here in parks and along beaches. We ate lunch at a park one day and this guy did his exercises for almost an hour. As I run down the beach in the mornings, there are several groups of people doing these exercises. You also see a lot of people practicing boxing with eachother.
Another thing that cracks me up when I go running is that I'll look to the side and see men in speedos and then look in front of me and see a lady with a jacket and gloves on. Quite the dichotomy. It is the end of winter here and probably around 60 degrees in the morning. To me, definitely not jacket and glove type weather, but also not speedo weather...the water is very very cold! Don just joined a group of swimmers that swim just under a mile every morning at 7 am. The group is probably about 40 people. Some wear wetsuits. Don doesn't have one, so he just wears a regular swimsuit. There is no way I could handle that cold water (about 60 F), but Don does great, and since he was a swimmer in high school it's very fun for him to be able to exercise this way again so conveniently!

So fun- can't wait for some more pictures.
I bet it feels WONDERFUL to have a target nearby- and they have ALDI there? They have it here in Missouri too- and yes you DO save heaps of money. Love you guys!
Hey! I can't even find your email for some odd reason, so this seemed easiest. I love your post. You've made me think that Australia might make a great anniversary trip this spring! If you don't have it, my new email is angmwhite@gmail.com. I'd LOVE to talk so let's set it up!
what a fun update! we've been wondering about you guys! i love all the different vocab, how fun! also sounds like you found a great apartment close to lots of convenient places. and they have Target?! are you in heaven? :) can't wait to skype soon!
What a wonderful place to live, especially because they have Target! I'll bet the kids just love the beach, sand and water (well, once it warms up!)
I loved your post! I can almost imagine what it's like to be there. It sounds so charming and fun! I'm glad you're having such a great time. I love how you guys just jump in to the culture and area. Can't wait to talk to you soon!
this sounds like such a blast!! i love hearing the updates--what a dream to live in australia!
Interesting to read about all of the Australian words and meanings. I can't believe Don joined that swimming group. Out of control. One of these days it's going to be you out there doing your Yoga while Don is swimming. Glad all is going well with the transition.
Wow, we should come live there as well...then maybe Tanni could get a job ;) We're so glad that you feel welcome and at home there, nothing can make up for that feeling. We're doing fine here in denmark allthough Tanni really misses Don in the quorum. He hasn't been able to find someone that can fill the void Don left ;)
Autumn has arrived here, so as you know that both means cooler weather but also an awsome change in the color scheme, so the tree are begining to go all golden. That's so pretty and sort of makes up for the low degrees!
When was it you would return to the states again?
We most definately will come visit you back home in the states when we get the chance.
Tell everyone Hi from the three of us!
Have you started watching "McLeod's Daughters" on the telly yet?
Amy, Thanks for the great post. I just can't stop smiling thinking about the five of you throwin' on your cozzies, tipping, and smakin' your chewy! I can't wait to hear Don imitate it when you see you again. There is no way that he won't pick it all up in the 6-8 months that you are there!!!
Wow! Sounds great. We love you all so much. Hope the acquisition of Omnicare is good news to you all.

GREAT post! I love all those little details. What an interesting change of lifestyle from Denmark - you're still learning the language, but it's got to feel good to understand most of it. But it'd be weird to hear the words and still not know what they meant. I can't wait for pictures of the beach! What a perfect place to live.
This is so fun to read Amy! Ya know, I always thought "brekkie," "pinch" and "heaps" were just my mom's slang. She always says "Let's have some brekkie" or "go out to brekkie" or "time for brekkie" and we've grown up saying "heaps" a lot. I wonder if it's somewhat of the British influence in both Australia and Canada that molds that effect? How funny... I never knew where brekkie came from, just thought my mom was full of funny nicknames for things. I have loved reading about these fun things! I wish all of those things that are in walking distance to you were more common place in the U.S. Public Transportation, walking and biking everywhere is so much more fun, convenient, and endorphin-producing! :)
We miss you guys here! You'll come back and have a depth and wealth of culture and learning and friends all over the world that you'll never forget! Paaarrrrtyyy OOOONNNN!!! Way to Carpe Diem!
